Roots of American Music
"Roots of American
Music" is a natural extension of Marks' love for traditional
American Music. This 6-week program is designed to expose students
to American music through demonstrations on traditional instruments,
recordings and books devoted to folklore, and to integrate that
knowledge by having students write a song each week in that particular
style. For full details click here.

I have had the pleasure of having Mark teach in
my music classroom for the last semester. My class consisted of
guitar students at a variety of levels, and Mark was extremely
adept at engaging all players.
Mark's "Roots of American Music" classes
expose students to music they may not otherwise experience, as
well as music they know and love. Even my "rockers"
had to admit that some of the country music was kind of cool!
Mark is able to gently guide "composition
rookies" through basic songwriting to create expressive,
personal, or just plain silly songs. Mark's extensive training
in performance, theory, pedagogy, and music history, combined
with his creativity and love of teaching, make for a powerful
combination, sure to pique the interest of any budding musician.

Along with his broad musical knowledge and experience,
Mark brings flexibility and innovation to the creative process.
He is a friendly and respectful listener as well as a diligent
team player. Mark's approach gently encourages the natural, unique
abilities in each of us.
